Summer 1927 and the Sessions That Made Bristol Famous

In 1927 Ralph Peer of Victor Records came to Bristol to record local musicians. The Carter Family made the trip from Maces Spring, Virginia, and auditioned on July 31, earning $50 a song, and the same visit produced Jimmie Rodgers' first recordings. Congress recognized Bristol as the Birthplace of Country Music in 1998, and the museum by that name opened on the Virginia side on August 1, 2014.

Tennessee Paperwork Rules on the Bristol Side

When a landlord may ask

If a disability is not apparent, T.C.A. 66-7-111 lets the landlord ask for reliable documentation of it and of the need; if only the need is unclear, only the need.

Who may write it

A health care provider licensed in any state with actual knowledge of the disability, or another qualifying professional, caregiver or agency.

What falls short

Documents from a website whose main business is selling certificates or registrations, and any request for confidential medical records.

Honesty matters

False documentation is material noncompliance with the lease, and misrepresentation is a Class B misdemeanor under 39-16-304.

Bristol Questions on the Tape Reel

Does Tennessee law or Virginia law apply to my Bristol rental?

It depends on which side of the state line the home is on. Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia share State Street but are separate cities with their own governments and police, and each follows its own state's law.

Who handles stray and loose dogs in Bristol, Tennessee?

The Bristol Tennessee Police Department's Animal Control does, with its animal shelter at 1140 Vance Drive; the number is 423-989-5600.

Can I keep my dog tethered overnight in Bristol, Tennessee?

Not between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless you have a permit. City code 10-46(c) describes permits tied to work schedules or hunting dogs, with an 8-hour limit.

What documentation does a Bristol, Tennessee landlord accept for an ESA?

Tennessee law lets a landlord ask for reliable documentation, which can come from a health care provider licensed in any state who has actual knowledge of the disability; papers from websites that mainly sell certificates do not count.

Is it illegal to misrepresent a support animal in Tennessee?

Yes. Misrepresenting a service animal or a support animal is a Class B misdemeanor under T.C.A. 39-16-304, and false documentation can also let a landlord end the tenancy.

Why is Bristol called the Birthplace of Country Music?

Because of the 1927 recording sessions Ralph Peer of Victor Records held there, which gave the Carter Family their start and produced Jimmie Rodgers' first recordings. Congress recognized the title in 1998.
