Named for a Rock on the River
In 1722 the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe named a stone outcropping on the Arkansas River the little rock, a landmark where the flat Delta gives way to the Ouachita foothills. The territorial capital moved here from flood-prone Arkansas Post, and the city was founded in 1821; one early proposal would have named it Arkopolis. In 1957 Little Rock Central High School became a landmark of the civil rights movement when nine Black students desegregated it.
