From Poplar Head to the Peanut Capital
Settlers named the spring here Poplar Head, and when the town voted to incorporate on November 11, 1885, it took the name Dothan, after the biblical city, because Poplar Head was already taken by a post office in north Alabama. A railroad stop came in 1893. When the boll weevil wrecked cotton in the early 1900s, farmers turned to peanuts, and about a quarter of the U.S. crop is now grown nearby, which is why Dothan calls itself the Peanut Capital of the World.

Does Dothan have a leash law?
Yes. Dothan's leash law is in Chapter 10 of the city's Code of Ordinances.
Who handles animal problems in Dothan?
The Dothan Police Animal Services Division, at (334) 615-4620, or online through citizen-service.dothan.org.
When does a puppy in Alabama need its first rabies shot?
At three months, or 12 weeks, of age. Alabama Code 3-7A-2 requires dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian.
How long is the first rabies shot good for?
One year. After that, boosters follow every year, or every three years if your veterinarian uses a three-year vaccine.
Can a Dothan landlord ask for my animal's vaccination record?
For a service animal, Alabama Code 21-7-9 allows a housing provider to request proof of compliance with vaccination requirements. A current certificate makes any animal request easier.
Can I get an ESA letter in Dothan without driving to Montgomery?
Yes. The screening is online and the evaluation is by telehealth with a clinician licensed in Alabama.
